What Does an Alternator Do?

Once your vehicle’s battery does the job of getting everything started, the alternator takes over to keep it all charged and running. It is also responsible for recharging the battery as you’re driving. A belt attaches the alternator to the engine.

An alternator can last up to twelve years without servicing, but once it goes, you will experience difficulty with keeping your car running. Your car’s warning light should come on at that point with either a battery or alternator symbol. If it doesn’t, there are other ways to narrow problems down to an alternator. It may begin with dimly lit lights, or you might notice that the gauges on the instrument panel stopped working. A screeching belt could be another sign.

When you begin to notice signs of charging problems, it’s time to have your vehicle serviced. Stop by VonDerAu Ford when you’re in El Campo. Our knowledgeable technicians are here to help keep you safely on the road.
